Case Study: Hot Water System Upgrade

Original system:
The site previously operated an open-vented hot water system with a low-temperature hot water (LTHW) primary circuit.
Issues with the existing setup:
The legacy system required annual cleaning and inspection of both the hot water storage (HWS) cylinder and the cold-water storage tank. In addition, changes in water-storage regulations meant the site held significantly more stored water than was necessary for the number of staff, resulting in over-capacity and inefficiency.
Our solution:
We installed two Sunamp Thermino 300 ePlus units.
Benefits of the new system:
Sunamp Heat Batteries use world-leading, patented Plentigrade® technology. The Thermino range incorporates the high-performance, non-toxic, non-flammable Plentigrade P58 Phase Change Material (PCM) to deliver instantaneous hot water on demand.
PCMs absorb, store, and release large amounts of latent heat during the transition between solid and liquid states. Sunamp’s unique PCM formula stores up to four times more energy than water over the same temperature range, enabling Thermino Heat Batteries to be up to four times smaller than the hot water cylinders they replace.
By eliminating the need for large volumes of stored water, the new Sunamp system removes the requirement for annual tank cleaning and significantly reduces ongoing maintenance. The dual-unit installation also provides built-in redundancy, ensuring continuity of hot water supply during maintenance or servicing.
Maintenance Requirements
- The expansion vessel air pressure should be checked every 2–3 years and topped up if required.
- Other than these periodic checks, the Sunamp Heat Battery does not require regular maintenance.
